Pongal Celebration 2018

TRC is always pleased to join hands with willing minds in all their endeavors.  As a part of such collaboration, TRC has celebrated the Pongal festival in 2018 Aaviyur village.  One of the students from that village attended an internship in TRC and after coming to know about the Trans community people he was very eager to bridge the gap between his village people and the community.  The function witnessed around 300 villagers gathering to participate in cultural fest, games conducted in which the village people enthusiastically along with the community people.

Transgender Day 2018

On 15th April 2008, Tamil Nadu started India’s First Transgender Welfare Board for the community’s welfare. The Welfare Board encouraged more participation of the Trans persons.  Since 2010, Transgender Day is being celebrated in Tamil Nadu.  On 15th April 2014, the Supreme Court of India gave a landmark judgment recognizing Transgender as the third gender.  Since then, India has started celebrating every year on 15th April as National Transgender Day.

TRC celebrated Transgender Day in Madurai where

  • Three self-employed Trans persons were honored.
  • Nangai, a movie about transwoman, was released in that venue before the directors Mr. SeenuRamasamy& Mr. Samudrakanai.
  • Students pursuing internships in TRC also honored in the Dias.
  • The cover page of the book “The Faces Unseen” was released which is translated by Ms. MahalakshmiRaghavan, Secretary of TRC, and originally written by Ms. Priyababu, Managing Trustee of TRC.

Trans Film Awards 2018

  • Trans people in the media are not portrayed in a prudent manner. They are either project as stooge or as a sex object in most of the movies.  There are very few who have tried to portray Trans people in an exceptional manner.  Of late, due to increased awareness and as a result of many Trans people coming out successfully in various fields, the portray has been considerably changed to a positive note.  In order to welcome such optimistic change, TRC has organized India’s First TG Film Festival in October 2018 at American college, Madurai.

  • Film Festival was organized for 2 days.
  • 39 movies were received from various States, of which 2 movies were directed by Trans people. In addition to that many college students had directed movies about Trans people.
  • Awards were distributed in the name of “TRANS FILM AWARDS 2018” in 8 categories like Best Actors, Best Actresses, Best Cinematography, Best Supporting Role, Best Editing, and Best Director.
  • Several celebrities from various fields like Cinema, media, and Literature honored the function by their presence.
  • American College joined hands with TRC to organize the festival, where several students participated to enhance them with have better knowledge about the community.
  • Corporate Sectors, Educational Institutions, Radio Station [Hello FM] collaborated in Trans Film Awards and extended their support.
